THREE STOPS IN NEW YORK
(Tre Stop a New York)

metropolitan lives, ordinary dreams, irreparably
intertwined destinies

Barbera Editore, 2009
Series: Aiko
Novel - Pag. 256
ISBN: 9788878993006

Synopsis
Three protagonists, numerous characters. The Epicenter: an Italian
osteria in Manhattan's East Village. The Backdrop: a newly elected
President, Giuliani's politics, Fashion Week, the Internet Bubble,
the crash of Wall Street.

Susana, scatterbrained and cheeky, lives in the heart of Alphabet City
where, despite her allergy to rules, she maintains the day-to-day routine
of rock-star, dog-sitter, pusher and hostess. When one of her clients
mysteriously disappears, leaving her the forced custodian of a pitbull,
life begins to get complicated. Amongst sexual encounters, way-out
concerts and being chased, her thoughtlessness is invaded by the ghost
of an intransigent mother and the remorse felt for a schizophrenic
brother she hopes to save by traveling. Thanks to her ingenuous little
ways, Susana has amassed enough money for the long dreamt of trip
to Brazil, but because of a silly distraction everything is destined to fall
by the wayside and she finds herself grounded. Amongst the classified
ads she finds an enticing offer. With it her survival begins.

I hired Mickey because as a barman he was adorable, with that damned
look that women could die for, until the police came to arrest him
in the middle of the restaurant. Abandoned by his father at the age
of ten he tries his luck as a computer programmer, he is the head
of a gang of graffiti writers and has a deep-rooted hate of Mayor Giuliani.
Paying a fortune, he is forced to "buy" a marriage to avoid deportation,
while, together with two friends, he plans a robbery during Fashion Week,
which is to re-write forever the future they did not have.
When his "bride" proves untraceable the immigration office looses little
time in contacting him for interrogation.

My first meeting with Benjamin was in my gynecologist's waiting room
where he explained to me that he had recently become a mother.
He is gay, a broker in high finance, has a past as a faithful husband
in a mormon community and his very own son thanks to the American
law on 'surrogate motherhood'. At the bar that they both adore,
Benjamin meets Fernando, a fashion photographer, a womanizer
on the edge of alcoholic and economic collapse, who dreams of being
killed in a rage of jealousy. Benjamin is aware of what is happening
with the Internet Bubble and programs himself a sharp change
of direction for the future. He is a visionary who has defied the laws
of nature and of god to obtain an heir and now has an urgent request
to make of me.

The lives of the protagonists unfold on parallel lines, while, despite
themselves, their destinies entwine, and without my realizing it,
mylife too is becoming bogged down in theirs. All will converge in a
single place, like in a theatre whose rows are too short, on a day
that will leave its irremovable mark on all of them. Here their destinies
will be fulfilled. It is the night of the eleventh of September, the long
story is about to finish and the encounters or collisions will smack
of tragedy, surrealism, predictability and melancholy, leading
to a finale with more than one surprise in the city, which,
like its inmates, is unwilling to surrender.
